Introducing P-Pop - Discovering Modern Philippine Music

Back in 2012, I used to make these sort of music reviews in my previous blog, they weren't anything "substantial" now that I look back at them and majority were of Taylor Swift's songs. ('cuz it just hit the right amount feels for my 17-year old self) Now 8 years later, I've taken a liking to songs made by our own talented composers:

**"Himig Handog (Eng: Melody Offering) is a multimedia songwriting and music video competition in the Philippines. The competition is operated by ABS-CBN Corporation and Star Music, the music subsidiary of ABS-CBN. The contest ran from 2000 to 2003 and was later revived in 2013. Since its revival, it is popularly regarded as "the country's premier songwriting contest" with Pinoy songwriters and composers submitting thousands of original compositions annually, and the country's top singers interpreting the songs in a live event." **-Wikipedia

I don't know about 2020, ('cuz this year doesn't count. AT ALL.) but the previous years when these contests took place was a blast for music-goers who just need some fresh tunes to listen to.

So without further ado, I'll be featuring here some music videos of my personal favorites, along with their lyrics and maybe any additional info I can find on the inspiration behind creating their music:

*Hey little girl, what're you up to
Put back that red lipstick
Put away that red dress
You might think it's alright
But no not tonight
Don't you know that it's not time

You gotta wait a little longer
Gotta get a little older
Don't rush the things that'll change

Coz everything takes time
As every song needs a rhyme
And I know you want it now
But you'll get there somehow
Just let it all unfold
Tomorrow can't be told
Take it slow and you'll get more in time
Oh oh oh

Hey little girl what're you up to
Tryin' to do the things that grown ups do
You know you're not ready
You're making a mistake
Patience is a virtue
And things have a rightful place

You gotta wait a little longer
Gotta get a little older
Don't rush the things that'll change

Coz everything takes time
As every song needs a rhyme
And I know you want it now
But you'll get there somehow
Just let it all unfold
Tomorrow can't be told
Take it slow and you'll get more in time
Oh oh oh

There are times when it feels like it's now or never
There are times when it feels like it's gone forever
But don't you worry there's tomorrow
There's tomorrow

Coz everything takes time
As every song needs a rhyme
And I know you want it now
But you'll get there somehow
Just let it all unfold
Tomorrow can't be told
Take it slow and you'll get more in time

Coz everything takes time
As every song needs a rhyme
And I know you want it now
But you'll get there somehow
Just let it all unfold
Tomorrow can't be told
Take it slow and you'll get more in time
Oh oh oh*

"The “Himig Handog P-Pop Love Songs 2014” entry “Everything Takes Time” was like a self-fulfilling prophecy-slash-life lesson for its composer and interpreter Hazel Faith dela Cruz.

She recalls writing it at the age of 18, when she was feeling pressured about getting into a relationship for fear that she might end up a spinster. It served as her reminder not to rush into things, especially something as serious as a true relationship.

Little did she know then that a song about love – and self-love for that matter – would still ring true for her (and her career, in particular) five years later." -StarCinema
